Aldea de Santa Fe is designed to be a new model for environmentally sustainable development in Santa Fe County. In hopes of creating a healthy community in which residents and visitors can rediscover the pleasures of civic life, the plan includes a mix of retail, offices, housing, a school, and a system of parks, greens, and plazas.
Following the proposed Santa Fe County General Plan 1996, Aldea de Santa Fe upholds the principles that:
Santa Fe County will grow as a community or collection of communities where social connections and local uniqueness will be valued and preserved;
there will be diversified housing, employment, and tax base;
the connections with the beautiful natural environment of the County will be an important part of all new developments and plans;
Santa Fe County will be a model for the good way of living;
protection of the environment, especially water, will remain a priority in Santa Fe County;
a physical plan will be developed that supports and directs sensible growth and development.
In addition, the village will serve as a model for the Sustainable Community Institute (SCI), a non-profit created to study and report on water use, traffic reduction, success of home occupations, and sense of community in Aldea.
